Susan Ryan, Strategic Planner, Golden Plains Shire and Laura Murphy, Strategic Planning

Susan, like many Australians, heritage is not from this country and after 12 years of local government within Arts and Cultural Services in Victorian’s eastern suburbs, her perspective of home was changing. The turning point was her studies and research at Deakin University; that opened her desire to create and discover new knowledge but changed her perspective of Country and planning for it. Now as a Strategic Planner, at Golden Plains Shire, Susan contributes not only to the growth of the Shire but growth with consideration to planning together for Country.

Laura Murphy is the Coordinator of Strategic Planning at Golden Plains Shire. Laura has been with the Shire for 18 years, over which time she has contributed to much of the planning related to the growth of the Shire; while building a dynamic team, who take pride in working towards creating thriving communities. Laura loves the variation that comes with working in a peri urban setting, particularly given Golden Plains Shires location between the two regional cities of Ballarat and Geelong.


Michael Mckeown, Director, Jensen Plus

Michael McKeown is a leading urban designer, planner and strategic thinker, with broad experience working with communities, developers and all tiers of government. He is committed to creating well-designed, greener and fairer cities, and works collaboratively with communities across metropolitan and regional Australia.


Julie Brook, Principal, Meridian Urban

Julie Brook is a Principal and local and regional planning specialist with over 15 years experience across the public and private sectors. Julie also holds an MBA, providing her with diverse business and project management skills for a holistic governance, policy and strategy outlook. Julie is experienced in translating complex legislative frameworks, planning instruments and policy formation, land use strategies, risk-based planning and planning for resilient communities. She is skilled in natural hazard integration for landslide, flood and coastal hazards. Her strong analytical skills compliment her specialist capabilities. Julie has been accepted as a Building Tribunal Referee.


Liz Ritchie, CEO, Regional Australia Institute (RAI)

Liz Ritchie’s had a lifelong affiliation with regional Australia, having spent her childhood in Deniliquin in south-western New South Wales. As CEO of the Regional Australia Institute her goal is to empower regions to thrive through leadership, activation, and impact. Liz spearheaded the development of the Regionalisation Ambition – a 10 year, 20 goal framework, that aims to ‘rebalance the nation’ by ensuring greater equity for our rural and regional communities. Duncan Sheppard, Senior Advisor, Resilience, Insurance Council of Australia

Duncan is an experienced advocacy, communications and government relations professional with extensive experience in both the public and private sectors. His current role is Senior Advisor, Resilience at the Insurance Council of Australia which is the peak industry body for the general insurance industry. Prior to this he was Senior Policy and Communications Advisor at the Civil Contractors Federation, and has also held senior advocacy roles with the Australasian Railways Association and the Australian Logistics Council. His government background spans both federal and local governments. In the role of Senior Advisor, Resilience, Duncan drives the ICA’s advocacy agenda for improved resilience in the built environment, with a focus on improving Australia’s building codes and standards, investing in household and large-scale resilience measures and improved land-use planning arrangements - ultimately helping to maintain an insurable Australia.
