The Standard
Aria Property Group and Urbis

Land of Traditional Owners: Land of the Turrbal and Yuggera Peoples

‘The Standard’ in South Brisbane represents anything but ‘standard’ planning practice.

Whilst this project delivers a new architectural landmark for South Brisbane, this award recognises the exceptional planning processes, collaboration, and negotiations which went into achieving DA excellence and innovation. This project highlights performance-based planning at its best.

The Standard is much more than a premium apartment complex, delivering the largest green wall in the southern hemisphere, ground plane activation and distinctive architecture… it is a symbol of what can be achieved when Council and private planners come together in unison, with allied professionals and a willing developer, to achieve a common goal in the public interest.

These public benefits extend far beyond the site itself - with the developer, Aria, funding substantial upgrades to ‘Block 4’ of Fish Lane, including large artworks, sculptures, lighting, pavement treatments and landscaping - designed and delivered in collaboration with Brisbane City Council. The Standard is a development that ‘gives back’ - not just to its immediate surrounds and residents, but to the broader area and community.

The Standard sends a message to all planners involved in DA: by going above and beyond usual development assessment processes, to deliver an outcome that exceeds pre-prescribed outcomes, in collaboration with all stakeholders, you can deliver remarkable public benefits and define a new ‘standard’ in development assessment.
