Statutory and Non-statutory Land Management Tools for Threatened Species + Ecological Communities

Kelly Reaston Development and Property Services, Planz Town Planning, Terrain NRM, Far North Queensland Regional Organisation of Councils

The judges unanimously agreed that this project was worthy of recognition and praised its dedication to design collaboration to deliver natural habitat protection beyond revegetation. The judges noted that the processes adopted by the project team were skillfully developed, and prioritised deliberative teamwork where all parties stepped outside their usual networks and cross-collaborated to deliver trail-blazing habitat protection on community and freehold land.

The recommendations from the project bravely go beyond traditional planning measures, recognising the complexity of environmental management challenges and the importance of ongoing outcome evaluation.

The judges commend the clear potential for the transfer of project methodologies to other jurisdictions and note how other complex policy issues could benefit from a similar collaborative and cross-jurisdictional approach.

The judges were also impressed by the emphasis on accountable, datadriven monitoring. The judges look forward to following the project’s implementation and observing how value is realised for local and regional communities.
